What is Laughter Therapy and How Can It Help You?

how did laughter therapy come about?

Dr. Madan Kataria, a medical doctor from India, founded Laughter Therapy (also known as Laughter Yoga) in 1995 after researching the powerful effects of laughter on physical and mental health. Drawing on scientific studies that showed the body benefits from laughter whether it is spontaneous or intentional, he developed a unique practice combining playful laughter exercises with deep breathing techniques. What began as a small group in a local park with just 5 people has since grown into a global movement in over 120 countries with more than 20 000 laughter clubs, benefiting people of all ages and backgrounds.

“Sometimes the most healing thing you can do is simply laugh… and let go.”

We’ve all heard the saying, “laughter is the best medicine” — and it turns out, there’s real truth behind it.

Laughter Therapy is a holistic healing approach that uses intentional laughter to improve emotional, mental, and even physical wellbeing. Whether the laughter starts naturally or feels a little forced at first, the body responds in the same powerful way.

💫 How Laughter Therapy Works

Laughter Therapy uses simple techniques such as breathing exercises, guided laughter, movement, and group interaction to help release stress and tension.

Even when laughter is intentional, it quickly becomes genuine — creating a natural shift in how you feel, both mentally and physically.
